About Tombigbee Electric Cooperative:

As Tombigbee Communications is paving the way for our communities by providing us a connection to reliable, high speed broadband internet, the rural farmers followed a similar path in 1935 to establish Tombigbee Electric Cooperative. Over 75 years ago, only 11% of rural homes in America had access to electricity. President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed this by creating the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) in order to provide electric service to rural America.  Our particular cooperative was formed due to nine dedicated rural farmers with a determination to improve the quality of life for those living in Marion, Lamar and portions of Fayette counties. Because of the dedications and dreams of these nine farmers, Tombigbee Electric Cooperative was created. Our first line was 12 miles long and served 22 members on the road from Guin to Sulligent. Fast forward 75 years in the future, we now service over 9,000 meters with thousands of miles of line.

Those who created our cooperative were visionaries of their time. They fought to have the same opportunities and luxuries as their big city neighbors. Now, with Tombigbee Communications, we are simply following in their footsteps. Though several years have passed and a new adventure is among us, our goal and our mission is the same as those nine farmers when they fought for their right to have electricity. Now, we're fighting to improve quality of life in our community in a different way, but in a way which is just as important.
